Immerse Yourself in
Natural Splendor
During your stay with us at Golden Horn Lodge, we invite you to take full advantage of everything our unique location has to offer. Wood-Tikchik Park is the largest state park in the nation. It encompasses 1.6 million acres — about 15% of all state park land in the U.S. It’s home to 12 beautiful lakes, sweeping lowlands, rivers that extend up to 60 miles in length, and rugged mountains that loom over 5,000 in elevation.
The lakes of Wood-Tikchik are crystal-clear and interconnected, draining into Bristol Bay by various rivers. These intricate water systems are teeming with northern pike, rainbow trout, arctic char, and salmon that feed the local ecosystem. They have been an integral part of the region’s subsistence and culture for generations. Visitors can participate in this longstanding tradition by joining a fishing charter or casting a line on their own along the banks of one of the park’s beautiful lakes. Alternatively, you can borrow a paddleboard from the lodge or hop aboard a riverboat and enjoy the scenery as you glide over the still, sparkling waters of Lake Mikchalk.
Of course, no visit to this wild and remote paradise is complete without a good ramble or two. Explore the gentle trails around the lodge or test your limits with more extreme leg-burners further afield. And keep an eye out for the local wildlife — bears, moose, wolves, beavers, and foxes all call the park home. Our staff will be happy to offer recommendations for hiking and wildlife-watching in the area.
Swap Stories Around the Fire
Here at Golden Horn Lodge, we believe in ending every glorious day with good company. We also believe the best relationships are forged fireside, where we encourage open conversation and connection. During your visit, you’re welcome to join members of WLFC's executive team for a series of evening fireside chats. These intimate, candid discussions are meant to be fluid and unconstrained. We’ll talk about business, the economy, innovation, and future goals — as well as personal stories and anecdotes about the people, places, and things we love best.
Plenty of Ways to Fill Each Day
Adventure literally lives in our backyard here at Golden Horn Lodge. You certainly won’t be bored during your visit. And just to be sure, we’ve lined up a diverse array of activities and tours to help you maximize every moment of your stay. Below are just a few. You are free to be as adventurous as you wish or simply unwind and relax during your stay.
If you love to fish or are interested in learning how, you’ll be pleased to know we have access to some of the top professional fishing guides that can take you on a fly-fishing excursion or lake-fishing charter by boat. This area offers some of the best fly fishing in the world.
You can also join a wildlife-watching tour to Brooks Falls, a favorite feasting ground for bears and one of the best places to spot them. Other activities include glacier-viewing tours, bird-watching expeditions, and excursions that offer an up-close glimpse at the walrus colonies inhabiting Bristol Bay’s Walrus Islands State Game Sanctuary.
Additionally, the lodge hosts four guided riverboats for guests interested in spending an afternoon out on one of the state park’s lakes, as well as a Cessna seaplane (subject to weather conditions and availability) with a pilot for impromptu flight-seeing tours.
